Respite Care at Home: Planning Time Off

How to arrange a break while keeping a familiar routine for the person you care for.

3 min read · Updated October 2026

Respite care means someone else takes over caregiving for a period of time. It can give you room for an appointment, rest or time with other family members. It is a type of relief, not a particular diagnosis or a guarantee of a certain schedule.

Choose the hours you actually need

List the time you will be away, including travel. Then list what happens during that window: meals, bathroom assistance, a nap or an evening routine. The tasks determine the support required.

Respite can take different forms, including in-home help and other community services. The National Institute on Aging describes arrangements ranging from hours to longer periods. Availability, terms and costs differ by provider.

Prepare a short handover

  • Daily routine, food preferences and activities.
  • Care tasks agreed with the agency.
  • Family and emergency contact details.
  • Medical instructions that must remain with qualified professionals.
  • How and when you want to be contacted.

If possible, arrange an introduction before the day you must be away. The Alzheimer’s Association suggests exploring respite before an emergency forces the decision.

Ask about the next visit

After the first visit, ask your relative what felt comfortable and tell the coordinator what could be improved. A useful plan may be an occasional visit or a recurring block of help; you do not need to decide the entire future at once.

Care Connect at Home provides family respite within its non-medical care services. Call to discuss tasks, dates and current availability.

Common questions

Do I need to wait until I am exhausted?

No. Planning respite ahead of time gives you more opportunity to discuss the routine and get to know the arrangement.
