Overnight, Live-In or 24-Hour Care?

What to ask about awake coverage, caregiver rest and help during the night.

3 min read · Updated October 2026

These labels do not all mean the same thing. The important question is whether someone needs an awake caregiver throughout the night, help at particular times or a caregiver living in the home with a defined rest arrangement. Confirm the actual terms with the agency.

Overnight help

An overnight arrangement covers an agreed night-time period. Ask whether it is an awake shift, what tasks are included and what happens when night-time needs are more frequent than expected. Do not assume the word “overnight” tells you whether a caregiver sleeps.

Live-in care

At Care Connect at Home, live-in care includes a caregiver residing in the home with an agreed sleeping and rest arrangement. It is not the same as continuous awake coverage. Discuss sleeping space, breaks and who covers the caregiver’s time off.

If assistance interrupts rest repeatedly, the arrangement may need to change. Tell the coordinator what an ordinary night looks like, including how often help is needed.

24-hour care

Our 24-hour model uses caregivers working in rotating shifts for awake coverage around the clock. The handover between shifts is an important part of the plan. Ask how many caregivers may be involved and how changes are communicated.

Before comparing quotes

  • Which hours have an awake caregiver?
  • What rest and relief arrangements apply?
  • How are night-time tasks recorded and reviewed?
  • What changes the price or requires a different schedule?

Compare the same coverage, not just the headline rate. An assessment and written quote are more useful than choosing the lowest number attached to a different arrangement.

Is live-in care the same as 24-hour awake care?

No. Live-in arrangements include rest. Care Connect’s 24-hour care uses rotating caregivers for continuous awake coverage.
